eAuction #73, Lot 201. Estimate: CHF 1'000.00
France, Royal (Restored). Gouvernement Provisoire. AR Essai de 2 Francs 1814. In the name of Friedrich Wilhelm III,
King of Prussia. Paris mint, by Tiolier. Obv. GALLIA REDDITA EUROPAE, three lis in circle; APRILE 1814 below. Rev. FREDERIC GUILLAUME III ROI DE PRUSSIE, ANGE / DE / PAIX / PARIS. Mazard 772a; Gad. 509b.
Rare this nice. Rich
iridescent toning. NGC MS64.
This
interesting essai was struck in Paris in April of 1814, after the fall
of Bonaparte but before the return of Louis XVIII, and commemorates the
peace that at last prevailed in Europe. Austrian emperor Franz I and
Prussian king Frederick Wilhelm III are both named in the series as
"angels of peace."
