eAuction #11, Lot 53. Estimate: CHF 150.00
Tiberius (?), for Divus Augustus. AE26 (9.31 g), Maroneia (?), Thrace. Obv. ΣEBAΣTOY, bare head right. Rev. ΘEON AYTOKPATOPA, capricorn right. RPC I, 5423 (3 specimens).
Very rare. Some obverse smoothing, otherwise, very fine.
RPC notes: "Grant suggested a mint in Cilicia, but there is no real evidence". In our opinion, the style and patina point towards a Macedonian or Thracian mint, possibly Maroneia, where the capricorn was a prominent reverse type in the 2nd Century AD.
