eAuction #74, Lot 41. Estimate: CHF 50.00
L. Titurius L. f. Sabinus. AR Denarius (19-22 mm, 3.49 g), Roma, 89 BC. Obv. Bearded head right of the Sabine king, Tatius; SABIN downwards to left, TA monogram to right. Rev.
Tarpeia, her hair dishevelled, facing and buried to her waist in
shields, with raised hands she fends off two soldiers about to throw
their shields on her; star in crescent above; L • TITVRI in exergue. Crawford 344/1a.
Toned. Interesting mint error with double strike on both sides. Banker's mark on obverse, otherwise, about very fine.
The reverse refers to the myth of Tarpeia, a Vestal Virgin who betrayed the city of Rome to the Sabines.
