eAuction #8, Lot 59. Estimate: CHF 320.00
Antoninus Pius (138-161 AD). AE 2 Assaria (27 mm, 13.91 g), Aegium, Achaia. Obv. AVTOKPATWP ANTWNЄINOC, laureate head right. Rev. AIΓIЄΩN, nude Boy Zeus advancing right on low base, brandishing thunderbolt and holding eagle. Kroll 13.4 (this coin). RPC online temp. 4611.
Very rare. About very fine / fine.
RPC only lists five specimens (this coin being among them) of which four are in museums. This coin has an interesting history as it came from an old collection whose owner received it as a gift from a member of the Nikolaides family, in the foundations of whose house in Aegium it was found in 1846.
From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 443.1. Kroll plate coin.
