eAuction #18, Lot 45. Estimate: CHF 250.00
Parthian Kings. Parthamaspates (116 AD). AR Drachm (18-20 mm, 3.67 g), Ekbatana. Obv. Diademed bust left, wearing Tiara. Rev. Archer (Arsakes I) seated right on throne, holding bow; monogram below bow. Sellwood 81.1; Shore 423.
Nicely toned. Good very fine.
Parthamaspates was the puppet king set up by Traianus after his brief conquest of Mesopotamia in 116 AD. After the Roman retreat in the same year, he was quickly defeated and exiled by Osroes. The Romans consequently granted him the co-rule of Osroene, a small Syrian slient state, which he continued to rule for a couple of years.
