Vitellius (69 AD). AR Denarius (18 mm, 2.51 g), Roma (Rome). Obv. A VITELLIVS GERM IMP AVG TR P, laureate head right. Rev. L VITELLIVS COS III CENSOR, L. Vitellius seated left on curule chair, holding branch and eagle-tipped sceptre. RIC I, 97 (R); Cohen 55 (40 Francs).
Very rare. Darkly toned, good very fine.
Lucius Vitellius the elder, the father of the emperor of the same name, had an impressive career under Tiberius, Caligula and Claudius. He was governor of Syria in der mid and late 30ies, in which function he sent Pontius Pilatus back to Rome after a murder charge. In 37 AD, he visited Jerusalem in support of Herodes Antipas. Later, he became consul and censor before dying in 51 AD.
