eAuction #4, Lot 13. Estimate: CHF 150.00
Elis, under the Achaean League. AR Hemidrachm (16 mm, 1.83 g), c. 40s-30s BC. Obv. Laureate head of Zeus right, KAΛΛIΠΠ behind. Rev. Central monogram within laurel wreath; countermarked with NE in ligature. Clerk 273-5. For countermark, see Howgego 623.
Probably unique. Host coin good, countermark very fine.
The ligate NE countermark occurs on Julius Caesar/ Octavian bronzes from Thessalonica issued by Domitian and thus in all probability stands for Nerva, which is most remarkable considering that the host coin here is a very worn pre-imperial Greek silver coin.
From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 692.1.
