Commodus (180-192 AD). AE Sestertius (25-28 mm, 20.32 g), Roma (Rome), 190-191 AD. Obv. M COMMOD ANT P FELIX AVG BRIT P P, laureate head right. Rev. HERC COMMODIANO TR P XVI / COS VI, Hercules standing left, sacrificing over altar and holding cornucopiae; to left, tree on which hangs lion-skin. RIC III, 581 (R).
Extremely rare type, apparently the first to appear in an auction for a decade, the previous in NAC sale N (2003), 2073. Minor scuffs, otherwise nearly very fine.
