eAuction #30, Lot 140. Estimate: CHF 4'500.00
Carolingians. Charlemagne (768-814 AD). AR Denier (15 mm, 0.89 g), Roma (?). Obv. CARO/LVS in two lines. Rev. R/O/M/A separated by cross. MG -; P. -.
Unique and unpublished. Slightly wavy, otherwise nicely toned and good very fine.
The reverse is known from MG 305 (read as "VORM") and Prou 941 ("VORM ... ou ROMA"). The reading as ROMA, thus indicating a Rome mint issue, appears to be more plausible to us.
