eAuction #33, Lot 21. Estimate: CHF 75.00
Pharnakia, Pontos. AE18 (8.11 g), c. 180-85 BC. Obv. Laureate head of Zeus right. Rev. ΦΑΡΝΑ, Zebu walking right. BMC p. 36, 1; Rec. Gén. p. 138, 2; acsearch.info -; asiaminorcoins.com -.
Very rare. Thick, compact flan. Very fine.
Pharnakia was founded c. 180 BC by the Pontic king Pharnaces I, probably on the site of the ancient town of Kerasos. While the city struck an issue of considerable size under Mithradates VI Eupator, its earlier coinage is very rare.
