eAuction #36, Lot 114. Estimate: CHF 400.00
United Kingdom. AE Medal 1739 (40 mm, 14.00 g), on the capture of Porto Bello by Admiral Vernon. Obv. IN PORTO BELLO THERS NOT HIS FELLOW / ADMIRAL VERNON, the Admiral with sword and cannon, ship behind. Rev. HE TOOK PORTO BELLO WITH SIX SHIPS ONLY / NOV 22 1739, six ships are entering the fortified harbor of Porto Bello.
Very rare. Good very fine.
In 1739, Vice Admiral Vernon - a strong advocate of small but hard-hitting naval operations - attacked and sacked the Spanish city of Porto Bello (Panama) with "six ships only", thus fulfilling his claim that he made after the blockade of 1727 in which a large British naval expedition had suffered heavy losses but not gained any success.
