eAuction #36, Lot 10. Estimate: CHF 500.00
Hypana, Triphylia. Under the Achaean League. AE Tetrachalkon (19 mm, 4.90 g), 191-146 BC. Obv. ΘPA-ΣY/MAX-OΣ, Zeus, nude, standing left, holding Nike in his right and long sceptre in left. Rev. AXAIΩN YΠANEΩN, Achaia seated left, holding wreath in right and long sceptre in left. BMC 151 var. = Clerk 104 var. (YΠANΩN); BCD Peloponnesos 700 (this coin).
Of great rarity, the only specimen to appear in an auction for at least15 years. Old corrosion spots and rough surfaces, otherwise, very fine.
From the BCD collection, ex LHS 96 (2006), 700.
Hypana was a small city on the west coast of the Peloponnesos of which almost nothing is known save for its extremely rare Achaean League tetrachalkoi.
