eAuction #1, Lot 63. Estimate: CHF 150.00
Ptolemaic Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy I Soter (305-282 BC). AR Tetradrachm (27-28 mm, 13.21 g), Alexandreia mint. Obv. Diademed head right, wearing aegis around neck; small Δ behind ear. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠTOΛEMAIOY, eagle standing left on thunderbolt; to left, P above A. Svoronos 247.
Spots of corrosion and graffito on reverse, otherwise, very fine.
On this coin we encounter the first true portrait of one of Alexander’s successors. The tiny letter Δ found in his hair behind the ear is the initial of the engraver, the so called Delta-Master
