eAuction #38, Lot 13. Estimate: CHF 750.00
Mothone, Messenia. AE Dichalkon (19 mm, 3.67 g), c. third quarter of 4th Century BC (?). Obv. Hepaistos running right, holding torch. Rev. MO within shallow, circular incuse. MG pp. 170-171; SNG Cop. 537; BCD Peloponnesos 803 (this coin).
Of the greatest rarity. Weak strike on obverse, otherwise, pleasant green patina and good fine.
From the BCD Collection, ex LHS 96 (2006), 803.
The autonomous coinage of Mothone - a small port city in the southwest of Messenia - belongs to the rarest of all Peloponnesian issues.
