eAuction #43, Lot 31. Estimate: CHF 75.00
Vespasianus (69-79 AD). Cast AE24 (5.43 g), Nikaia, Bithynia. Proconsul L. Plancius Varus. Obv. AYTOKPATOPI KAIΣAPI OYEΣΠAΣIANΩ NEIKI, laureate head right. Rev. EΠI MAPKOY ΠΛANKIOY OYAPOY ANΘYΠATOY, panther seated left, one front paw resting on cantharus. RPC 629.
Very fine.
An interesting contemporary cast imitation, probably a so-called Limes Falsum. These cast bronzes were likely produced as local small change when there was a shortage of regular coin supply, but it is very rare to find them made of provincial bronzes.
