eAuction #45, Lot 64. Estimate: CHF 150.00
Septimius Severus (193-211 AD). AE Assarion (22 mm, 4.13 g), Thouria, Messenia. C. 198-205 AD. Obv. ΛOY CЄΠ CЄOYHPOC ΠЄP CЄ, laureate head right. Rev. ΘOVPIATWN, female figure with rayed crown (Aphrodite?) standing left, holding dove in right and sceptre in left; to left and right, Λ-A. BCD Peloponnesos 829 (this coin); otherwise, apparently unpublished.
Extremely rare. Very fine.
From the BCD and Rhousopoulos collections and ex LHS 96 (2006), 829.
The city of Thouria was given to the Spartans by Augustus in gratitude for their support at Actium (hence the Λ-A on the reverse), and as a way of punishing the Messenians who had helped Marc Antony.
