eAuction #45, Lot 38. Estimate: CHF 1'000.00
Kythera, island off Lakonia. AE Tetrachalkon (19 mm, 6.36 g), circa 100-50 BC. Obv. Head of Aphrodite to right. Rev. Dove flying right, holding wreath in its Talons; below, K-Y. BCD Peloponnesos 998 (same dies); BMC 2 (same dies).
Very rare and in exceptional condition for this difficult issue. Green patina and good very fine.
Ex Hartmann Collection, Dorotheum V, 1967.
The coinage of the island of Kythera is uniformely very rare and almost never found in good condition. The famous Aphrodite sanctuary on the island was the oldest in all of Greece and it thus comes as no surprise that Aphrodite is shown on most of the island's coinage.
