eAuction #10, Lot 36. Estimate: CHF 1'500.00
Sicyon, Sicyonia. AR Stater (23-24 mm, 12.18 g), c. 431-400 BC. Obv. Lion walking right on ground line, left paw raised; above, bow; below, ΣE. Rev. Dove flying right with wings open; above and below twail, Σ/I; all withing olive wreath. BMC -, Traité 797, pl. CCXXI, 21 (= Pozzi P 4064, same dies).
Very rare, apparently one of only eleven examples known with lion only. About very fine, nicely toned.
From the BCD collection; ex LHS 96 (2006), 194 and Münzen & Medaillen, FPL 96 (1950), 11.
This is one of the most unusual of all the Sicyon staters. It replaces the normal Chimaera by a lion, a type otherwise only found on an extensive series of contemporary hemiobols. The reason why this was done is unclear.
