eAuction #46, Lot 18. Estimate: CHF 500.00
Caracalla (198-217 AD). AE Tetrassarion (34 mm, 18.44 g), Plotinopolis, Thrace, 214. Obv. AYT K M AVP CЄV ANTΩNEINOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΠΛOTEINOΠOΛEITΩN, youthful Heros on horseback to right, holding sceptre. Varbanov 1851.
Extremely rare. Pleasant green patina and very fine.
From the François Righetti Collection; ex CNG 53 (2000), 1051.
Plotinopolis, named after Trajan's wife Plotina, was one of the smaller mints of Thrace. Our coin was likely issued on the occasion of Caracalla's visit of Thrace during his slow travel to Syria and Egypt in 214/5.
