eAuction #47, Lot 101. Estimate: CHF 375.00
Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD). AE Sestertius with hammered-up edges (protocontorniate) (32-33
mm, 28.31 g), 161-162 AD, Rome. Obv. IMP CAES M AVREL
ANTONINVS AVG P M, Radiate head r. Rev. CONCORD AVGVSTOR
TR P XVI COS III / S-C, M. Aurelius and L. Verus standing with clasped hands;
Marcus holds a scroll RIC III 824.
Rare protocontorniate. Brown patina, very fine.
The edges of ordinary bronze coins were apparently hammered up to give them a distinctive appearance. The contorniates imitated these "protocontorniates" both in their raised edge and in their copying of reverse and especially obverse types from earlier sestertii and middle bronzes.
