eAuction #51 - Literature sale III, Lot 167. Estimate: CHF 15.00
Schulman, Jacques. Amsterdam, 5-9 April 1965.
Catalogue No. 239. Coins and Medals. 3959 lots, 46 plates. Prices realized
list. Printed card covers as issued. Worn. Good. Spring 705
A note from BCD: In this substantial catalogue, the 161 coins of Tarentum obviously form
the most interesting group, with about one and a half plates of photographs
used to illustrate the best examples. There are nearly four more plates of
Greek coins, nearly two of Roman and one plate of Byzantine. A detailed note on
p. 80 after the description of lot 1547 vindicates the previously condemned
unique gold coin of Euhesperides in Cyrenaica, quoting a 1962 letter from
Jenkins. Apparently, Robinson had expressed the “gravest doubt” on the
authenticity of this coin (see BMC Cyrenaica, Introduction p. CXCIV, note 1)
but now, together with Jenkins, considered the coin genuine. The coin however,
estimated at 30000 Dutch Guilders, remained unsold.
