eAuction #50, Lot 446. Estimate: CHF 2'500.00
USA - Netherlands. AR Medal 1782 (45 mm, 29.45 g), J. H. Holtzhey. On the reception of John Adams in Holland on 19 April 1782. Obv. LIBERA SOROR / SOLEMNI DECR AGN ("A free sister / acknowledged by a solemndecree") / 19 APR MDCCLXXXII, on the left, the personification of the Netherlands standing right, clasping hands with the personification of the USA and handing over a free cap to her. America is holding a shield with 13 stars and is standing on a subjected lioness, symbolizing England. Between them, a decorated altar. Rev. TYRANNIS VIRTUTE REPULSA / SUP GALLIAE AUSPICIS ("Tyranny repelled by Valor / under the auspices of France") / I. G. HOLTZHEY FEC, the British unicorn stumbling before rocks, its horn broken off. Betts 603. Verv. v. Loon 573.
Magnificent light iridescent toning. Minor hairlines on the reverse, otherwise, nearly FDC.
A beautifully crafted medal, commemorating the diplomatic recognition of the Independence of the USA by the Dutch republic. On 20 October 1782, the medalist Johann George Holtzhey wrote a letter to John Adams, saying: "Your nation's independence has inspired me to immortalize this great and noteworthy event in a medal commemorating its liberty". Attached to the letter was an example of this medal.
