eAuction #50, Lot 21. Estimate: CHF 750.00
Kings of Macedon. Alexander III ‘the Great’ (336-323 BC). AR Tetradrachm (28 mm, 17.18 g), Ake mint. Dated CY 10 (306/5 BC). Obv. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY, Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; |O (date) in left field. Price 3301.
Rare in this condition. Beautifully toned and extremely fine.
The new civic year dating in Ake is connected to the arrival of Antigonos I Monophthalmos in Phoenicia (CY 1 = 315/4 BC; cf. Price pp. 406-7). Our coin was issued in the year 10 of the new city era = 306/5 BC, which was the year Antigonos became the first of the Diadochoi to assume the title βασιλεύς (King).
