eAuction #50, Lot 168. Estimate: CHF 3'500.00
Titus (79-81 AD), for Divus Augustus (14 AD). AE As (27 mm, 11.84 g), Roma (Rome), 80-81. Obv. DIVVS AVGVSTVS PATER, radiate head of Augustus to left. Rev. IMP T VEST AVG REST / S - C Eagle standing facing on globe, its head to right. Komnick 41.0. RIC 460.
Exceptionally well struck and with a magnificent dark green patina. Very light smoothing, otherwise, good extremely fine.
This powerful portait of Augustus is quite exceptional: it combines the classic haircut of the first princeps with a rather brutal facial expression reminiscent of Caligula's Agrippa portraits and the head and neck bulkiness of the Flavian emperors.
