eAuction #50, Lot 291. Estimate: CHF 1'000.00
Byzantine, Latin Rulers. Baudoin II de Courtenay (1240-1261), in the name of John III Vatatzes of Nicaea. AV Hyperpyron (24-26 mm, 4.27 g). Obv. Christ enthroned facing, holding Gospels; above throne, four pellets. Rev. John standing facing, being crowned by the Virgin. DOC 9f.
Very rare. Very fine.
These coins are attributable to Baudoin II de Courtenay thanks to the 14th century Florentine merchant Francesco Balducci Pegolotti and his 'Practica della mercatura' (published 1280). He gives the siglum of four pellets which we find on our coin to the Latins.
