eAuction #54, Lot 67. Estimate: CHF 900.00
Western Asia Minor, Uncertain mint. AR Drachm (15 mm, 4.20 g), 5th Century BC. Obv. Chimaira walking right. Rev. Facing gorgoneion within incuse square. M. Six, “Monnaies grecques, inédites et incertaines” in NC 1890, p. 235, 15. Rosen -. SNG von Aulock -. SNG Copenhagen -.
Of the highest rarity. Nicely toned and very fine.
Ex CNG EA 174 (2007), 58 (1100 USD).
The types of this enigmatic coin are very distinctive: a Chimaera on the obverse and a facing Gorgoneion - reminiscent of issues of Abydos and Klazomenai - on the reverse. In recent years, a corresponding Hemidrachm (CNG 84 (2010), 678) and two Obols (CNG 85 (2010), 477 and CNG 91 (2012), 345) have turned up, therefore allowing a more complete understanding of the issue, but its exact origin still remains a mystery.
