eAuction #54, Lot 224. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Severus Alexander (222-235 AD). AR Denarius (19 mm, 3.09 g), Rome or irregular mint, 226 or somewhat later. Obv. IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG, laureate head right / LIBERALITAS AVG III S (?), Liberalitas standing left, holding abacus and cornucopiae. RIC 154 (?).
Minor die break on the obverse and traces of overstriking on the reverse. Beautifully toned and FDC.
This is a curious coin! The reverse shows clear evidence of a severly clashed die: an incuse nose, a mouth and outlines of a legend to the lower right. However, the S following the Liberalitas counting does not seem to make any sense, could it be that the coin is a contemporary imitation of nearly official style?
