eAuction #57, Lot 83. Estimate: CHF 1'200.00
Valentinianus III (425-455 AD). AR Half-siliqua (13-14 mm, 1.01 g), Ravenna, Rome or Treviri mint. Obv. D N VALENTINIANVS P F AVG, Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Rev. VICTORIA AVGG, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm branch; in exergue [?]. Cf. RIC 2084 (Ravenna, D N PLA VALENTINIANVS); 2086 (Rome, same); 2095 (Treviri, different reverse type).
Extremely rare and apparently unpublished. Irregular flan and small flan-crack, otherwise, good very fine.
The short obverse legend omitting PLA(cidus) is only attested for a series of siliquae struck at Treviri (rev. VIRTVS ROMANORVM). The style of our coin points towards a corresponding issue of the mint of either Rome or Ravenna.
