eAuction #8, Lot 15. Estimate: CHF 300.00
Lokris, Lokri Opuntii. AR Stater (23 mm, 11.40 g), 340's BC. Obv. Head of Demeter left, hair wreathed with three leaves of wheat, wearing a triple drop earring. Rev. Ajax, holding sword and shield decorated with serpent, advancing right on ground line; below, a spear pointing down to left; to left and right, OΠON-TIΩN. BCD Lokris - Phokis 77 and 457.6 (this coin); Corpus Group 26, 168d.
Extremely rare, one of five known. Traces of mounting on obverse and surface problems, otherwise, about very fine.
From the BCD collection; ex Marti Hervera (30 October 2001), 4.011 and ex NAC 55 (2010), 457.6.
This is the only known obverse die from this group, known from just five specimens. Sabine Schultz attributed it to the so-called Pheneos master, who usually signed his masterpieces with ΠO, see Sabine Schultz: Die Staterprägung von Pheneos, in: RSN 71 (1992), no. 1.1, p. 50, pl. 6.
