eAuction #14, Lot 41. Estimate: CHF 200.00
Geta, as Caesar (198-209 AD). AE Assarion (21 mm, 4.33 g), Thouria, Messenia. C. 198-205 AD. Obv. VKΓ CЄMIOC ΓЄTAC K (sic!), bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. Rev. ΘOVPIATWN, Apollo standing left, holding tripod and long staff; to left and right, Λ-A. NCP, O XXIV var.; BCD Peloponnesos 837 (this coin).
Very rare. Reverse slightly off-centre, otherwise, very fine.
From the BCD collection and ex LHS 96 (2006), 837.
The city of Thouria was given to the Spartans by Augustus in gratitude for their support at Actium (hence the Λ-A on the reverse), and as a way of punishing the Messenians who had helped Marc Antony.
