Caracalla (197-217 AD). AE37 (28.65 g), Philippopolis, Thrace, 214 AD. Obv. AYT K M AYP CEYH ANTΩNEINOC, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. Rev. KOINON ΘPAKΩN AΛEΞAN / EN ΦIΛIΠ/ΠOΠO, price-crown on table. BMC 37; Varbanov 1273.
Rare. About very fine.
Struck on the occasion of the emperor's visit to the city in 214 AD. The Pythian games held at the time were renamed Alexandrian-Pythian games in honor of Caracalla, whose imitatio Alexandri was well known.
