eAuction #9, Lot 16. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Siphnos, Cyclades. AE13 (1.61 g), c. late 4th Century BC. Obv. Diademed female head right. Rev. ΣI-Φ, eagle flying right. Cf. SNG Cop. 747 (Tetrobol); SNG Cop. 749 (eagle standing left on pediment).
Extremely rare. Short flan, otherwise, very fine.
From the BCD and Copenhagen collections, comes with the original Copenhagen collection tickets.
Siphnos is a small island west of Paros. It flourished in archaic and early classical times due to its gold- and silver mines, when its inhabitants even dedicated a treasury at Delphi. After the mines were exhausted in the late classical period, however, the island impoverished quickly.
