Andronikos I. (1183-5 AD). EL Aspron Trachy (28-31 mm, 4.40 g), Constantinopolis. Obv. + Q KERO – HQEI, the Virgin orans, nimbate, standing facing, wearing pallium and maphorium; on Her breast, nimbate head of the infant Christ; at sides of nimbus, MHP ligate – QV. Rev. ANΔΡONIKω – DECPOTHC, Christ on right, to left, Andronicus standing facing; Christ wears pallium and collobium, holding Book of Gospels and crowning the Emperor; in upper field, IC – XC. Sear 1984.
Rare. Unusually well struck. Extremely fine.
Andronikos was a very capable general who became emperor in 1183 when Alexios II. was murdered. He launched a wide variety of reforms in his short reign but was quickly deposed and slowly tortured to death in 1185.
