eAuction #70, Lot 119. Estimate: CHF 3'000.00
Hadrianus (117-138 AD). Aureus (20-21 mm, 6.92 g), Rome, c. 125-127 AD. Obv. HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS, Draped and cuirassed bust to right, seen from behind. Rev. COS III, Hadrian riding horse prancing right, raising right hand. RIC 784 (R2); Strack 146.
Very rare. Struck on a broad flan and almost very fine.
All aurei of Hadrian from the period 125-128 AD have the obverse legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS with the emperor's name starting to the left of the bust. Only a small issue has this formula reversed, apparently struck from only one obverse die.
