eAuction #11, Lot 87. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Gallienus (253-268 AD). AE Sestertius (23-27 mm, 14.61 g), Roma (Rome), 256-7 AD. Obv. IMP GALLIENVS P F AVG GERM, laureate and cuirassed bust right. Rev. ORIENS AVGG / S - C, Sol standing left, holding globe and raising right hand. MIR 108n (no specimen).
Extremely rare. Irregular flan and heavy patination, otherwise, fine to very fine.
The Oriens reverse with Sol holding globe rather than whip is an apparently unpublished variety for Gallienus on Sestertii. It is known from very rare Antoniniani (2 specimens known to Göbl) and a single Aureus, however, so the corresponding Sestertius does not come as a surprise.
