Sicily, Gela, struck in Phintias. AE22 (9.89 g), 2nd-1st century BC. Obv. Head of
river god Gelas to right, crowned with reed. Rev. ΓΕΛΩΙΩΝ, Warrior, nude,
wearing Corinthian helmet and chlamys, kneeling right on ram, holding short
dagger in his right hand, the horns of the animal with his left hand; in
field left, H. Jenkins 285, 554. CNS III 63.
Rare. Very fine.
In 282 BC Gela was destroyed by the Mamertini from Messana. The
inhabitants were moved to Phintias (the modern Licata) where they struck
coins with the ethnic of their old home town.
