eAuction #17, Lot 2. Estimate: CHF 750.00
Emporion, Spain. AR Drachm (18-20 mm, 4.63 g), 241-218 BC. Obv. Head of Arethusa right, three dolphins around. Rev. Pegasos flying right, its head depicted as a small seated figure (Kabeiros?), EMΠOPITΩN below. CNH 15; SNG BM Spain 16.
Rare. Beautiful style. Old collection toning and good very fine.
Emporion was founded around 600 BC (northeast of modern Barcelona) as a rather small colony of Massalia but gained importance after the Romans used it as stronghold and army depot in the second Punic War. Its pre-roman silver coinage is rare.
