eAuction #18, Lot 85. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Poemenius (?), for Constantius II (December 350 - August 351 AD). AE2 (21 mm, 6.58 g), Treveri (Trier). Obv. DN CONSTANTIVS P F AVG, diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev. SALVS AVG NOSTRI, large Chi-Rho; A - W in fields. Ex. [...]. RIC VIII, Trier, 333.
Very rare. Short flan, otherwise, good very fine.
According to a rather obscure passage from the historian Ammianus Marcellinus, Poemenius revolted against the usurpers Magnentius and Decentius in Trier
and handed the city over to the legitimate emperor, Constantius II. Although
this coin is clearly associated with the events of the revolt in Trier, the exact circumstances are unknown and it has alsobeen suggested it may in fact have been struck in 353 AD shortly after the downfall of the usurpers.
