eAuction #19, Lot 153. Estimate: CHF 20'000.00
Portugal. D. Sancho (1185-1211). AV Morabitino (180 Dinheiros) (28 mm, 3.87 g), Coimbra. Obv. +SANCTVS EX RTVCA, king riding right on horse, holding sword and sceptre surmounted by cross. Rev. +IN NE PTRIS LFIIII SPS SCIA, Qinas Cross of pointed shields with 7-pointed stars in the angles. Gomes 04.08 var. (legend).
Extremely rare. Superb extremely fine.
An exceptional example of the first Portuguese gold coin. The denomination Morabitino came from the most common Arabic coin that circulated in islamic Spain, substituting the Dinar and boasting Portuguese sovereignty at a time when the kingdom was still tiny and constantly in danger.
