Messana, Sicily. AR Tetradrachm (25 mm, 17.02 g), c. 420-413 BC.
Obv. MEΣ-ΣΑΝΑ (retrograde), slow biga of mules right, the standing charioteer holding reins with both his hands, in his right hand, kentron; in exergue, two dolphins.
Rev. Μ-Ε-ΣΣΑΝ-ΙΟ-Ν (retrograde), hare running right, below, dolphin to left.
SNG ANS 363 (same dies); SNG Lockett 825 (same dies).
Excellent style. Ancient flan crack on obverse repaired with silver inlay, otherwise, nicely toned and almost extremely fine.
