Caracalla (197-217 AD). AE Assarion (20 mm, 5.09 g), Boiai, Peloponnesos. Obv. MAP AYPH ANTWNINOC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind. Rev. BOIATWN, Hygieia, on the left, standing right, feeding snake held in her right hand from bowl held in her left, facing, on the right, Asklepios, standing left, resting his right hand on staff entwined with a Serpent. BCD Peloponnesos 955 (same dies); NCP -.
Extremely rare, possibly the second known. In exceptional condition for the mint, arguably the best Boiai coin known. Black patina and good very fine.
From the BCD collection, acquired privately in 1979.
Boiai lay on Cape Malea in the extrem southeast of the Peloponnesos.�Pausanias, visiting the area in the 2nd Century AD,�reports�a sanctuary of Asklepios and Hygieia on the outskirts of the town and a temple of Asklepios in the town itself.
