eAuction #25, Lot 33. Estimate: CHF 300.00
Ptolemaic Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy I Soter (305-282 BC). AR Tetradrachm (28 mm, 14.13 g), Alexandreia mint, c. 294-285 BC. Obv. Diademed head right, wearing aegis around neck; small Δ behind ear. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠTOΛEMAIOY, eagle standing left on thunderbolt; to left, P above monogram. Svoronos 255; SNG Copenhagen 70; BMC p. 15, 16.
Obverse Graffito and some roughness on upper reverse, otherwise good very fine.
On this coin we encounter the first true portrait of one of Alexander’s successors. The tiny letter Δ found in his hair behind the ear is the initial of the engraver, the so-called Delta-Master.
