eAuction #29, Lot 4. Estimate: CHF 350.00
Allobroges, Southeast Gaul. Cn. Pompeius Voluntilus. AR Drachm (14-15 mm, 2.33 g), c. 85-75 BC. Obv. Laureate head left. Rev. Horse prancing left; "Kerykeion" above. D/T 3117.
Rare. Good very fine.
Although Voluntilus' name is missing on this coin, the type with the Kerykeion above the horse indicates that it belonged to his coinage.
Voluntilus was a chief of the Allobroges who attained his Roman citizenship from Pompey the Great, to whom he became a Client and took over his name.
