eAuction #13, Lot 27. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Magnesia, Ionia. AR Tetartemorion (5 mm, 0.27 g), before 494 BC. Obv. Archaic head of eagle right. Rev. Wreath or monogram. Cf. Hauck & Aufhäuser 19 (2006), 117 and 12 (1996), 65 (Obol, with facing eagle but similar reverse).
Extremely rare. Very fine.
This fascinating coin probably belongs to one of the earliest issues from Magnesia in Ionia, struck before the end of the Ionian revolt against the Persians. It already featured, in an archaic style, the eagle as a city emblem that later was also used by Themistokles and Archepolis.
