eAuction #4, Lot 120. Estimate: CHF 120.00
Maximianus Herculius (286-305 AD). AE Follis (27-30 mm, 8.57 g), Treveri (Trier), c. 302/303 AD. Obv. IMP MAXIMIANVS P AVG, Laureate and cuirassed bust left. Rev. GENIO POPVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, head towered, naked but for chlamys over left shoulder, right holding patera, left cornucopiae; S - F across fields, II TR in exergue. RIC VI Treveri --.
Very rare variant. Good portrait. Obverse: extremely fine, reverse: very fine. Nearly fully silvered.
Folles with bust left are all rare for the S-F / I-II TR emission. The Roman Imperial coinage does not list any specimen for Maximianus Herculius nor his Co-Augustus Diocletian. The known types show the Caesars Constantius (RIC 534) and Galerius (RIC 542), both rated rare (R).
