eAuction #1, Lot 98. Estimate: CHF 100.00
Elagabalus (218-222 AD). AR Tetradrachm (23-24 mm, 12.41 g), Antioch, Syria. Obv. AVT K M A ANTWNEINOC CEB, laureate bust right, drapery over left shoulder. Rev. ΔHMAPX EΞ YΠATOC TO B / Δ - E, eagle standing right, head left,
wreath in beak; star between legs.
Prieur 254 var.
Good surfaces for the type. Very fine.
The Elagabal issues of Antioch are very complex. Prieur lists a large number of
this type, differentiated only by style. It seems to us that both the unusual
portrait as well as the small eagle with five plumes hanging down from each
wing fit best to Prieur 254, even though that issue is only listed with an
eagle stand left and looking right.
