eAuction #36, Lot 53. Estimate: CHF 1'200.00
Traianus (98-117 AD). AE Dupondius (28 mm, 11.51 g), Roma (Rome), c. 107-110 AD. Obv. IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P, radiate bust right, drapery on left shoulder. Rev. S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI / S C, arched bridge, consisting of two stories, with arch surmounted by quadriga at either end, spanning river; boat sailing below. RIC II, 570; C. 544.
Minor smoothing, otherwise about extremely fine / extremely fine. Rare this nice.
There has been much dispute over the identification of this bridge in the past but it seems likely that the traditional description as the Danuvian bridge constructed by Trajan's famous architecht Apollodoros of Damascus in 104 AD is correct.
