A note from BCD: It was called “The Sale of the Century” and perhaps not unjustly so. This particular copy, bound in full leather, in the “BCD style” as some like to say, has an added attraction. The names of the buyers are bound in at the end, copied from a confidential list stolen from the offices of M&M in Basel immediately after the sale. This information courtesy of the late Silvia Hurter who nearly had a heart attack when she found out that this list was made available to BCD. One added proof that the list originated in the M&M offices is that the buyer of lot 252 is the only one to be entered with his initials: HC for Herbert Cahn. Forty years is a long time but nevertheless I hope the buyer of this lot will keep this sensitive information to himself.
