eAuction #3, Lot 104. Estimate: CHF 200.00
Roman Provincial. Uncertain mint. AE22 (6.27 g). Obv. Flat. Countermarks: Laureate head of Caracalla right; below, facing winged figure holding scales right, left hand in hip. Rev. Flat. Howgego pl. 12, 283i.
Very rare, the third and best known. Host "coin" flat, countermarks good very fine.
An enigmatic coin of which Howgego knew just two other specimens, both with the same countermarks and no traces of an undertype visible. It seems likely that the countermarks were applied to a blank rather than to a regular coin and that these are trial pieces or some sort of token money.
