eAuction #39, Lot 232. Estimate: CHF 80.00
Great
Britain: Volume III: The Lockett Collection. Part I: Spain
– Italy (gold and silver) (nos. 1-684, plates I-XII with tissue guards). London
1938. Folio, printed tan stiff paper covers, worn at edges. Interior
Very Good.
CS 1913,
Daehn 1970
A note from BCD: This and the next four lots illustrate all the Greek silver and gold of
this amazing individual, Richard Cyril Lockett, who, as Robinson’s introduction
to this volume says, built up a “general collection of the old-fashioned type,
… not confined to any one district of the Greek world, yet abounding in long
series and in fine coins.” Robinson goes on to say that “A special feature [of
this collection] is the bronze, which will be published in a further volume,
and which it is hoped may be of special interest to students”. Alas, this never
happened and, which is worse, Lockett’s Greek bronzes, with very few
exceptions, were sold in non-illustrated group lots in a series of Glendining
auctions.
